There's a reason why this advice is being put out by higher rated players, and don't just discredit that. If you're getting trapped again and again in an opening, sure have a look and see where you can improve but that's about it. You're not losing because of openings, nor does any beginner 99% of the time - It's the blunders and basic sense of awareness that needs to be improved. Obviously my opponent didn’t know of my must win, of course we were both out of first place but since the CM was White and about 500 points rated more than me they tried to win, I played my usual super solid repertoire since I knew I was going to get some chances and I did, in the end I won a nice game and I probably scored the biggest upset of the tournament.News Puzzles Games Strategy Twitch Other Resources (note I never beat a CM before in classical tournaments but there is always a first time!). My latest “must-win” was in the last round of an OTB where if I had won I would have gotten a national title for my rating (I couldn’t win the tournament with 3,5/5 tho) and if I would have drawn I would have had to wait for many months before my next tournament so I really had to win, even if my opponent was a Candidate Master.

Must-wins aren’t very frequent among non GMs because we don’t play any knockout or Round-Robins (where you can be a contender for first place and play someone who’s in last place in last round that can try to draw for example) and so my most frequent tournament format is 5 rounds Swiss where in the last round everyone tries to win anyways, there is no need to force anything against them as they usually self-destruct.
